From academic rigor to superior student-support systems, WalletHub’s recently released report, States with the Best & Worst School Systems (2024), spotlights the top states for education.

The research, which measures school systems on a host of educational metrics (e.g., performance, funding, safety, class size and instructor credentials), suggests multiple factors contribute to educational quality.

For example, top-ranking states offer an abundance of clubs, sports and arts programs, encouraging students to develop beyond the classroom.

High-performing states also value rigorous teacher-certification standards and continuous professional development.

Maryland and Connecticut, two states that invest significantly in education, report more engaged students as a result of their states' efforts. Meanwhile, Massachusetts (WalletHub’s No. 1 state for education), focuses on students’ various interests and aptitudes.

Regardless, top-performing states strive to ensure all students, regardless of their needs, receive the necessary support to succeed.
